Protecting Policyholders. Preserving State Regulation.
Insurance decisions belong close to home. When families buy insurance, they count on it to help plan for the future and guard against uncertainty. We expect and deserve oversight that understands the risks we face in our own communities.
We support keeping insurance regulation firmly within the states. Our state insurance commissioners are best informed and equipped for the job. The National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC), which fosters collaboration between the states, provides a strong foundation for protecting policyholders.
Stand up for State AuthorityThe American Insurance Alliance supports fair, competitive, and healthy insurance markets that protect consumers.

Local Knowledge. National Coordination.
A coastal homeowner in Maine and a small business owner in Missouri have very different insurance needs. Effective oversight must account for those differences, including local climate, economic conditions, and the availability of coverage.
Insurance is not one size fits all and regulation should not be either. The challenges each community faces vary across every state. Hurricanes, wildfires, and other threats affect regions differently. State-based regulation allows oversight to reflect each state's markets and risks, with the NAIC helping regulators coordinate across state lines.
That collaboration strengthens the state-based system. National convenings, such as those coordinated by the NAIC, use a national wealth of knowledge to craft model laws that can serve as a reference point for underresourced states to make their own laws. States decide whether and how to adopt them through their own legislative and regulatory processes.
Cooperation Without Federalization.
We strongly oppose legislative efforts and cynical campaigns that could lead to the replacement of state authority with a single federal framework. Our priority is to strengthen the existing system by supporting state regulators, practical coordination, and accountability to the people who purchase insurance.
Moving authority to Washington would put decisions about local insurance needs further from the communities they affect. We believe policymakers should strengthen the tools state regulators use and support the NAIC's role as a convening body.
National challenges demand cooperation. The NAIC already provides a forum for that work.
Preserve State Authority. Prioritize Policyholder Services.
The future of insurance oversight should build on local expertise and coordinated action.
Stand with us to preserve state-based insurance regulation, support collaboration across states, and keep regulators' priorities on the policyholders.
